BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A man accused of beating his 8-year-old son to death in 2012 pleaded guilty on Monday, and was sentenced to 40 years in prison.
East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore confirmed Michael Anthony Robertson, 52, pleaded guilty to manslaughter and cruelty to a juvenile in the death of his son, Xzayvion Riley.
Robertson was scheduled to stand trial next month on first-degree murder, a conviction that would have carried a sentence of life in prison without parole.
The terms of his plea agreement give Robertson the 6 1/2 years he has been in custody since Xzayvion’s death in June 2012, according to The Advocate.
At the time of his death, Xzayvion was living with his mother at an apartment complex on Coy Avenue. His dad, Michael Robertson, was visiting when deputies said Xzayvion’s mother called for help on Tuesday, June 12, 2012. Xzayvion was taken to the hospital, but did not survive. The autopsy revealed Xzayvion died due to a ruptured intestine caused by blunt force trauma to the stomach.
