PRAIRIEVILLE, LA (WAFB) - One person is dead after a crash on I-10 early Wednesday morning, according to authorities.

Louisiana State Police confirms one person died in a wreck on I-10 W near Prairieville around 2 a.m. on Wednesday, September 19. The man killed has been identified as Dean Critten, 51, of Marrero.

The initial investigation by LSP shows the wreck happened as Glenn Walker, 60, of Baton Rouge, was stopped on the westbound shoulder on I-10 in a 2006 International 18-wheeler, when for unknown reasons, Critten was driving west on the shoulder of I-10 in a 2007 Chevy Monte Carlo when he hit the back of Walker’s trailer on the shoulder. The impact caused Critten’s car to go underneath the trailer, causing severe damage to the rear axles.

LSP says Critten was not wearing his seat belt and sustained fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead on the scene by the Ascension Parish Coroner’s Office. Walker was not injured. It’s unknown if impairment was a factor in the wreck, but toxicology samples were taken from both drivers nonetheless.

The interstate was reopened just before 6:45 a.m., causing heavy delays for commuters.

The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office assisted LSP in the crash.
