BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A Baton Rouge man charged with murder is accused of making a big mistake that led to his arrest and the arrest of his alleged accomplice. Police say he left his mother's cell phone at the murder scene.

James Barrow and Michael Smith are charged in the shooting death of Brent Cole. Cole is from Dequincy, which is near Lake Charles. He was killed back in March while trying to find his hotel. Karen Cole, Brent Cole's widow, says she is relieved to hear about the arrests. On March 15th of 2008, Karen Cole held onto her phone and listened as gun shots rang out on the other end of the line.

She was talking to her husband. Brent Cole was shot in the stomach along Goodwood Boulevard and later died. Police say he was shot at several times while driving in his car. He was lost and trying to get to his hotel on Airline, so he could perform at his church Sunday morning. "We had the perfect marriage and it just happened so sudden," Karen Cole says. When our news crew broke the news to Cole about her husband's alleged murderers being arrested she was somewhat surprised and relieved.

Police say Michael Smith left his mother's cell phone at the murder scene and that slip-up led to the arrests of both Smith and his alleged accomplice, James Barrow. "They will never know what a jewel they took. If they would have ever known him, they would have never done it," Karen Cole says.

Cole left behind his wife and two sons. There's no word yet on exactly what motivated the shooting.
