Charlotte Lafauci's Penuche--Italian Carmel Fudge

3 c sugar
1 large can evaporated milk
1/2 c white Karo syrup
1/2 c butter
1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
2 c chopped nuts
1 teaspoon vanilla

Mix sugar, milk, butter, Karo cream of tartar in heavy pot.  Cook until it forms a hard ball in cold water.  Remove from heat, stir in vanilla a nuts.  Pour onto butter plate and cut.
