BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - This season, Southern's football team will be "Gearing Up for Greatness."
The Jags have had years of knocking on the door and they are now ready to reclaim the SWAC title.
If you want to watch it on TV again, it will air:
- Thursday at 1:30 a.m. on WBXH
- Friday at 1:30 a.m. on WBXH
- Saturday at 5 a.m. on WBXH
- Sunday at 7 a.m. on WBXH
- Sunday at 1 p.m. on WAFB
- Sunday at 5 p.m. on WBXH
The 2018 offense is loaded with playmakers and the defense is poised to protect their house.
The talent on both sides of the ball will be special for the Jags, as will be the debut of some new 'swag' thanks to a deal with Under Armour.
Who will take over at quarterback this season with the departure of Austin Howard?
John Lampley, Glendon "Bubba" McDaniel, and Ladairious Skelton all possess a certain skill set that could make any one of them the starter.
"Well, the biggest thing I think is leadership," said head coach Dawson Odums.
"A guy that's cerebral; a guy that can handle adversity when adversity strikes because it's bound to happen," said offensive coordinator Chennis Berry in what he wants in a quarterback. "And in the game of football, they have to learn that. If something good happens, keep playing and if something bad happens, keep playing."
Gone are Lenard Tillery and Willie Quinn, so who will the new QB look to hand off and pass to?
Dennis Craig, Jamar Washington, Cameron Mackey, and Kendall Catalon will be the primary targets in the passing game.
Sophomore Devon Benn gives the Jags a lightning quick punch in the running game that will be the focus of the offense.
The Southern defense ended 2017 with a bit of an empty feeling with its loss to Grambling in the Bayou Classic.
How about this year's defense?
The trenches are where the 'D' starts and the line will be led by Simeon Houston, Dakavion Champion, and Tyran Nash.
Coach Odums believes the Jags can play up to six linebackers this season, led by Calvin Lunkins and AJ Palomino.
Demerio Houston, Montavius Gaines, and Andre Augustine will be the leaders in the defensive backfield with the departure of Danny Johnson.
Where did that new swag come from?
The Jags will be sporting some new uniforms from Under Armour and equipment manager Derek Price couldn't be happier.
"One of the things I wanted to do before I left here was, 'Man, we've got to get a contract with one of these big companies,'" said Price. "The kids deserve it. And I think the best feeling I had was when the day the team reported this year and they had their first team meeting and we unveiled the uniforms to them. And man, it was like, 'Oh, my God.' It was like a rally. They were so happy and it makes you feel good."
Southern opens its season on September 1 at TCU in Fort Worth, TX. Kickoff is at 11 a.m.
