EAST BATON ROUGE PARISH, LA (WAFB) -

Baton Rouge firefighters and police officers joined teachers to welcome students back to school at Bernard Terrace, among many other schools across the parish.

They greeted them with high fives and also visited classrooms to wish the kids good luck. Firefighters say they really enjoy mingling with the students.

"My favorite part about this is watching the kids get so excited, watching them smile, but even more so, watching the firefighters become excited by being part of such an event," said Mark Miles with BRFD.

"We are ensuring that we have high expectations for all students. Our traditional students, our gifted students, and even for our teachers, so we are looking to make sure that student achievement is improved," said Demetric Alexander, principal of Bernard Terrace.

BRFD visited ten schools Thursday morning, including Magnolia Woods, Ryan, and Twin Oaks.

Bernard Terrace's theme this year is superheros in training, so Thursday's superheroes were of course the first responders.
