BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Southern University held off Tuesday on its first day in full pads.
As the Jags continue to break in their quarterbacks, they're definitely getting a good look on a daily basis with a defense that may have lost three key pieces, but overall, returns a lot of experience and depth in 2018.
"This year, we have a solid bunch of guys; we don't have a bunch of All-Americans and all these big name guys but we have a great core of guys and we're deep," said third-year defensive coordinator Trei Oliver. "We've got a bunch of guys that … we're two-and-a-half deep with the d-line and the same thing with the secondary, so the biggest thing now is we don't have to have guys, like [junior defensive end Jamal] Tillman, play 60 [or] 70 plays a game. Now, we have guys in situations that can step in and help us out."
The secondary, which is comprised of junior Montavius Gaines, senior Andre Augustine, and senior Demerio Houston can be the group that Oliver can lean on to make a whole lot of plays. All three saw a significant amount of snaps last season and they're all very rangy with each bringing his own skill set to the table.
"I like to hit hard, but at the same time, I want to get my hands on that ball," said Gaines. "So, that's where all the money at, getting your hands on the ball."
So, creating more turnovers is the key?
"Yeah, that's key," Gaines replied.
"We have three that have played; we signed some really good ones, so we're going to go about six deep there," said head coach Dawson Odums about his secondary. "So, if we stay healthy, then we'll have about the same chance as anyone in our conference."
And the Jaguars were still technically in shells Tuesday, with many of the guys not wearing thigh pads underneath their pants. So, Wednesday will officially be their first day in pads.
