BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - For the last 14 years, the Southern University football team has worn Russell apparel each day in practice and every game day on Saturday.
Things have changed ahead of the 2018 season. Along with stadium and campus renovations, the football team will be sporting new Under Armor gear as the team has now partnered with the company, based out of Baltimore, Maryland, as part of a five-year deal.
"I welcome change. I think change is good. It's all about how you look at it. I think when you're embracing our football team and we're going from Russell to Under Armor, I think it creates an excitement," said Jaguars head coach Dawson Odums in a press conference Tuesday. "I think they'll be excited to see what we're giving them, what they'll be wearing, and how they'll be looking in it. So I really think our team is looking forward to it. I think it's a great fit. It's a great fit for our program. We're happy to be in partnership with Under Armor. I think it's going to do wonders for our program. Not only our athletes, but also our fan base."
Odums also spoke at the conference about the upcoming season and what appears to be a very open Southwestern Athletic Conference. The Jaguars haven't won the conference championship since 2013.
"It's really... it's about this group coming together and, first and foremost, believing that they can achieve that," Odums said of winning the SWAC title game. "And then, we put the process in place to how we take the steps to achieve that. I really like the heartbeat of the team. I really think it's something they want to achieve. And now, as coaches, we have to put them in position to have that opportunity and if we do that. You have to be good and you have to be lucky. The ball has to bounce your way. Well, I think it's about time for it to bounce our way."
