BIRMINGHAM, AL (WAFB) - Dawson Odums and his Southern Jaguars have been picked to finish second in the SWAC Western Division behind defending champion and arch-rival Grambling in a vote of the league's coaches and sports information directors.

Grambling was also selected as the overall favorite with a SWAC-best 96 points, while the Jaguars finished ahead of Prairie View and Texas Southern with 78 points.

However, among 51 spots on the All-SWAC first and second teams, Southern only had two selections, with offensive lineman Jeremiah Abby and defensive back Andre Augustine.

SWAC East favorite Alcorn State had 11 picks, second only to Grambling, which topped the list with 15 All-SWAC players, including 10 on the first team.

Defensive back Demerio Houston and tight end Dennis Craig joined Odums to represent the Jaguars in Birmingham, AL for SWAC Media Day.

Houston, a senior from Shelby, NC, played in 11 games last season for Southern. He had 11 receptions for 165 yards and three touchdowns.

Craig, a senior from Glen Oaks High School in Baton Rouge, finished the 2017 season with 26 total tackles, 16 passes defended, and one interception.

The Jaguars finished the 2017 season with a 9-4 overall record and 6-2 in SWAC play. The team went on quite a roll, winning seven of its last eight games.

Longtime Southern assistant coach Eric Dooley is now the head coach at Prairie View A&M.

Meanwhile, longtime LSU assistant coach Mike Haywood is entering his third year as head coach at Texas Southern.

Southern will open training camp August 1 and plays its season-opener September 1 at 11 a.m. against TCU in Fort Worth, the day before LSU faces Miami, FL in Dallas.
