WHITTIER, CA (KCAL/CNN) - A California woman is in serious condition after her husband reportedly attacked her with a chainsaw.

Police in Whittier, CA, are now looking for Alejandro Alvarez, who they say not only attacked his wife in front of their children, but got away in a stolen SUV.

Police said the gruesome attack involving a chainsaw happened around 3 p.m. Wednesday in the 7700 block of Milton Avenue in Whittier, CA.

Alvarez, 32, is suspected of attacking his wife at their home right in front of their three children. All were under the age of 10.

Devastated friends of the couple who arrived at the scene say the woman's name is Gloria and both she and her husband are from Mexico.

They said Alvarez works in construction and they still don't understand what could have possibly triggered such a violent attack.

Investigators said by the time officers arrived at the home, Alvarez had taken off and he later stole a blue 2004 Mercury Mountaineer with California license plate 8ABD233.

Martha Garcia who lives nearby said she is heartbroken to hear about the vicious attack especially since it involved an entire family in her normally peaceful neighborhood.

"It's pretty scary," Garcia said. "It makes you think 'what were they thinking' and who has a chainsaw lying around? We want to feel safe where we live and sometimes we just don't know who our neighbors are."

Police said Alvarez is considered to be armed and dangerous.

He was last seen wearing a Hurley t-shirt and dark jeans.

They are asking for help from anyone who might have information on where he might be or where he is going.
