Sportsline Summer Camp: Zachary Broncos

Sportsline Summer Camp: Zachary Broncos - Part 1

ZACHARY, LA (WAFB) - The Zachary Broncos are gunning for their third state championship in four years.

Head coach David Brewerton has certainly transformed the program into a power, just as he did with the Livonia Wildcats.

"This past year, after our big semi-final win in West Monroe and we're on the bus coming home and we get home, Keilon [Brown] told me at that point, he said, 'Coach, the game kind of slowed down for me tonight. It was quiet out there,'" said Brewerton. "I said, 'Well, there was 15,000 people there. I assure you it was not quiet.' But when your quarterback feels that way, that means things are really starting to come around for him and we're happy about that."

Brewerton said when the Broncos won it all in 2015, that team was then basically gutted by graduation, including superstar quarterback and Warrick Dunn award winner Lindsey Scott. But attrition isn't a big problem this time around, as the Broncos have eight starters returning on both sides of the ball, including Brown, who has done quite well replacing Scott. Brown has won the Sportsline Player of the Week award multiple times and likely will again sometime in the future.

Expectations have changed a lot in Zachary and the Broncos say that's not pressure, it's a pleasure.

"It's a lot different than it was before Coach Brew," said senior linebacker Wes Brady. "Now, we're talking about state championships and just winning a whole lot more."

"I love it," added senior right tackle Caleb Johnson. "I love when we get on the bus to go to the Superdome and see a big flag with a 'Z' on it and the whole town is just cheering and supporting you. I love that the community looks up to us."

"But it's a lot of self-imposed pressure inside the program, as well. We expect to go out there and do what we do. We're going to hold our kids accountable and make sure that level is adhered to," Brewerton added.
