There are still seven more weeks of Sportsline Summer Camp before the jamborees start on August 23 and Monday night we checked in with the Vikings and head coach David Masterson from Northeast High.
The Vikings return senior quarterback Rashaun Steel and two all-state receivers he can target. One of those, 6-foot-2, 190-pound wideout Johnny Selders, showed up time and again in last month's 7-on-7 workouts. Steel and Selders are just two of a dozen seniors, even though Northeast said goodbye to 19 seniors off a team that was 8-4 and made it to the Class 2A quarterfinals.
Jascent Scott at 6-foot-3, 190-pound receiver is the other deep threat and with sprinter Deonte Fisher taking on a bigger role at running back, this offense could be something special if it can replace the guys up front.
"The issue with us is no secret; it's the offensive line," said Masterson. "We graduated every single lineman from tackle to tight end. And not just did we lose them all, they were all three-year starters. So, we are starting back. Coach Bush Mack has his hands full with a bunch of sophomores and maybe even a freshman or two."
"We're ready to get back, back to where we were last year but surpass that," Steel added. "I mean, we've got a young group. It's going to be tough but it's nothing we can't handle."
