MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

A man is dead after police say he was caught by a K-9 unit during a burglary-in-progress in Montgomery.

Lt. Andre Mitchell with the Montgomery Police Department said officers responded to the burglary-in-progress at around 2:30 a.m. Sunday in the 3800 block of Cresta Circle. When they arrived, it appeared the suspect was inside the home and the homeowner approved a K-9 unit entry.

Mitchell said the K-9 apprehended the suspect inside the home, and he was taken to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

MPD has asked the Alabama State Bureau of Investigation to investigate the death of the suspect. The suspect's identity is unknown at this time.

According to Capt. Regina Duckett, the K9 handler has been placed on administrative leave and the K9 is currently under quarantine at the city kennel.
