The Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank Requests Immediate Food Assistance

The Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank would like to thank you for your overwhelming support to assist those directly affected by the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. The generosity of the Greater Baton Rouge community has been tremendous allowing us to distribute approximately 636,000 pounds of food items over the past week. That’s 67,000 pounds a day!

The Food Bank encourages the community to continue their dedication to servicing those in need.

For the next 5-10 days we are providing immediate relief to evacuees in various shelters. For this reason we will need single-serving, individually wrapped food items to sustain them.

Examples of these foods are:

  • “Pop top” items of complete meals (i.e.: Spaghetti O’s)
  • Fruit cups
  • Granola bars
  • bottled sports drinks, fruit juices
  • Cookies
  • Crackers
  • Chips
  • Candy bars
  • Small boxes of dry cereal

The Food Bank has received an over abundance of bottled water. Therefore, we do not request any bottled water at this time.

In addition to these items, the Food Bank also requests non-perishable food donations to assist us in supplementing the meals at the shelters after our immediate relief effort. Examples of these foods are:

  • Canned vegetables (beans, peas, carrots, etc.)
  • Canned soups
  • Dried beans
  • Canned meats
  • Rice
  • Pasta
  • Peanut butter
