BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Dozens of kids from the Healing Place Church helped out Friday to keep the Baton Rouge Police Department's units looking clean.
They were a part of about 700 kids that were out and about volunteering in many different ways. About 30 of that group was at BRPD headquarters on Airline Highway making sure the patrol cars looked as good as new. The Healing Place said the event is a part of the kids' education, showing them how important it is to serve the community.
"It makes me feel really happy inside to see that everyone has joy on their face for what we're doing today," said Ilita Abney, one of the volunteers. "When they come and give back, it's really special because it shows you're really getting to the child who is one day going to be a very important part of the community as an adult. They'll take these lessons learned and apply it, so it definitely gives a good hope for the future that they're out here doing this and giving their time freely and understanding that stuff like service is what makes everybody great."
Some of the other kids were at the Gonzales Police Department washing their units as well. But it wasn't just a car wash. Others cleaned schools, cut grass, and dressed up flower beds.
