BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A Baton Rouge man is now behind bars after an incident on May 25 where he reportedly hit his girlfriend and held her head underwater in an attempt to drown her, all in front of the woman's 3-year-old child.

Officials with the Baton Rouge Police Department say on May 25, they responded to a home on Woodland Ridge Boulevard about a domestic complaint. The victim claims her live-in boyfriend of the past eight years, identified as Marlon Duplessis,  slapped her in the face during an argument. The victim also said Duplessis threw her to the floor and then filled the bathtub with water and forced her head underwater to try to drown her.

The victim said she tried to leave the house, but Duplessis caught her and dragged her back inside by her hair. She said he also damaged her phone to prevent her from calling police. The victim also told officers all of this happened in front of her 3-year-old daughter.

Duplessis was arrested June 13. He is charged with attempted second degree murder, false imprisonment, and domestic abuse battery with child endangerment.
