Washington Parish deputy arrested for reportedly having knowledge of drug use

WASHINGTON PARISH, LA (WAFB) - A deputy with the Washington Parish Sheriff's Office has been arrested for reportedly having knowledge of illegal drug use by inmates under his supervision.

On June 5, the sheriff's office requested the Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations look into the case. Their investigation led to the arrest of Deputy Joe Wayne Sandifer, 67.

The preliminary investigation showed Sandifer was aware of drug use by inmates/trustees assigned to the department's motor pool, which was under his supervision. LSP says the investigation further showed Sandifer knew about inmates receiving illegal drugs, which he would hide in his assigned vehicle for the inmates. A search of Sandifer's vehicle revealed a small amount of illegal drugs.

On June 8, Sandifer was booked into the Washington Parish Jail on the following charges:

  • Possession of marijuana
  • Activities regarding contraband in a penal institution
  • Malfeasance in office

The investigation is ongoing. Additional arrests are pending. Sandifer's bond was set at $11,000.
