METAIRIE, LA (WVUE) -

Michael Thomas always plays like he has a chip on his shoulder. It's been evident since he stepped foot on the field as a rookie and proved the teams that passed on him in the first round wrong.

Year two was about making sure that his rookie campaign wasn't a fluke and becoming the most reliable set of hands on the field. Now heading into his third season, Thomas is dedicated to fine tuning his game to take it to the next level.

"Just small details and making more plays," says Thomas. "Just finding ways to add more value. It's a lot of things, but it's a lot of small things."

While those small things may not be noticeable all the time, what did stand out at OTAs this year is Thomas's frame. He says he hasn't put on much weight, if any, but he did reduce body fat and add muscle.

"Just been putting on muscle doing the training workouts we have here and then just eating good and getting good rest and just staying disciplined," says Thomas. "It's what my genetics have gotten me."

But the added strength and muscle isn't just to improve speed and play-making ability. Thomas aims to remain durable to increase time on the field as well.

"You want to be at tip top shape and play your best football," says Thomas. "You would like to play the whole time. The sooner you can get to season form, the better. So I'm just doing more to try to get more."

After all, the players regarded as the best at their position tend to remain healthier than the rest. And at the top of that list is where Thomas plans to be sooner than later.

"That's what I live for, to be able to take that next step and then see what they say," says Thomas. "Once the numbers line up, at the end of the day, I feel like I'm going to be right there with the best of them. That's the only thing I can control."
