DOTD hopes to bring down number of crashes on I-10 with new safety video

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - There are more than 800 crashes on I-10 between Baton Rouge and New Orleans each year. The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) has come up with safety video they hope will bring that number down some.

The video shows an animated drive on I-10 from Lafayette through Baton Rouge. It reminds motorists there are several features along the route to enhance their safety. They include cable barriers, rumble strips, and message boards that show the traffic cues along the way. DOTD Secretary Dr. Shawn Wilson says the hope is that people will put down their phones, slow down, and watch.

"There's only so much engineering, so much education, and that's the important thing. It's driver responsibility. If we can focus on that and educate the public on how we try to keep you safe, they might be willing to step up and do more on their own," said Wilson.

The state plans to expand on its safety series in a couple of weeks with another video focused on driving through construction zones. It will feature the I-10 widening project underway between Highland Road and Prairieville.
