ST. MARY PARISH, LA (WAFB) -

An elderly man was killed in a two-vehicle crash Monday morning.

Louisiana State Police identified him as Lenis Clements, 87, of Charenton.

Troopers reported the wreck happened on LA 87 at Ache-Clement Road in St. Mary Parish a little after 11 a.m.

Master Tpr. Brooks David said the investigation up to this point shows Clements was trying to cross LA 87 from Ache-Clement Road when his vehicle was hit by a 2011 Nissan Altima driven by Kashonda Verrett, 41, of Franklin.

According to David, Clements was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown out of the vehicle. David added Clements was taken to Franklin Foundation Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators said Verrett was properly buckled up and suffered minor injuries. She, too, was taken to Franklin Foundation Hospital, troopers reported.

David said impairment is not suspected as a factor in the crash, but Verrett was cited for operating a vehicle with a suspended license.

Blood samples were taken from both drivers and sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

The crash remains under investigation.
