PLAQUEMINE, LA (WAFB) - Emergency officials responded to the scene of an accidental shooting in Plaquemine Friday night, says the Plaquemine Police Department.

The incident happened around 7 p.m. on Friday, June 1 near Plaquemine City Park on Sherburne Street. Chief Kenny Payne says one male juvenile was shot in the leg and transported to a local hospital.

The chief says a group of at least eight juveniles was at a home near the park, and somehow a shot was accidentally fired by one of the juveniles, who was reportedly unfamiliar with the weapon. The shot struck the male victim, who is 14 or 15-years-old, in the thigh.

The chief further says a third juvenile then hid the weapon after the shooting, however, police have recovered the gun.

The investigation is ongoing.
