CORVALLIS, OR (WAFB) - Friday's win over San Diego State was about as ideal as it could have been for the LSU baseball team.
"We played well enough to win today," LSU head coach Paul Mainieri said after the game. "It wasn't our greatest game, certainly, but well enough to win."
The Tigers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead against the Aztecs and looked like they would control the rest of the game against the Mountain West champions, but as SDSU saw more pitches from starter Nick Bush, the Aztecs scored three runs in the fourth inning to tie the game. From there, Mainieri made the first pitching change of the day, turning to freshman Devin Fontenot in relief. Fontenot pitched three innings and gave up two hits and one earned run with four strikeouts.
"That's what we do on the pitching staff here at LSU," Fontenot said after the game. "We pick each other up. Even though we have some guys injured, you have to go out there and give it your best and help the team win."
The Tigers exploded for three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning before Todd Peterson closed the game in 14 pitches to defeat San Diego State 6-4.
They face the winner of the Oregon State and Northwestern State game Saturday at 7 p.m. PST.
