BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Wednesday was another busy night at the capitol, and there was progress made to fix the budget.
Lawmakers changed the key tax bill which would extend a portion of state sales tax increases from 2016. But instead of increasing the amount of the tax that would be extended, they removed a handful of exemptions on the tax. The new version of the bill would essentially fill the entire budget hole.
But the bill's author, Republican Lance Harris, says he can't support the changes.
"My posture would be to reject the Senate amendments on the House floor. In it's present posture, it gives us the best chance to fill some of the hole that we have that we have to deal with," he said.
Harris told the committee the new bill won't get that far.
Lawmakers have until June 4 to figure out a compromise to avoid another special session. Budget negotiations begin on the House floor Thursday.
