DENHAM SPRINGS, LA (WAFB) - They're often our first line of defense, but often don't get the recognition they deserve.

For the 45th time on Thursday, the Denham Springs Kiwanis Club came together to honor and thank this year's Peace Officers of the Year. Little, aspiring trooper, Levi Russell, presented awards to Darryl Averett, Trevor Sterling, Sydney McCulloug, and Trenton Palmer.

"He knew that officers were hurt and their families were suffering and he's got a great heart. He's got a real big heart for a little guy. And he just loves his police officers," said Rosie Russell, Levi's grandmother.

Levi often hands out pretzels to officers, and when he doesn't spot someone in uniform, his family says he'll often ask them to go in search of an officer just to thank them for their service.
