Two teens arrested after 1 killed in shooting in neighborhood with 'nonexistent crime'

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A man is dead after a shooting in Baton Rouge and two teenagers have been arrested in the case.

The Baton Rouge Police Department reported it happened in the 2900 block of 77th Avenue near I-110 around 8 a.m. The location is right next to a park.

BRPD detectives announced Tuesday evening they've arrested two 16-year-old males in connection with the case. Both have been charged with first degree murder. Investigators believe robbery was the motive for the shooting and that the victim was shot during a possible drug transaction.

Neighbors say the victim was shot inside his car. They added he drove off after getting shot and crashed into a telephone pole down the street.

According to police, the victim was dead when officers arrived on the scene. BRPD identified the victim as Douglas Chenevert IV, 19.

Homeowners say crime is nearly nonexistent in the neighborhood, which is known as Southern Heights.

"Never; we may have had one incident within the last two decades," said Michael Simmons, who lives in the neighborhood. "But other than that, that doesn't happen here. So, it's a shock when something like that does happen in this neighborhood."
