ASCENSION PARISH, LA (WAFB) - One man is dead and his father has been arrested after a boating incident Saturday night, according to officials with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.
Authorities say a 20-foot aluminum vessel, driven by Patrick White, 53, of Sorrento, with his son Caleb White, 27, as a passenger, hit a bulkhead on the Amite River Saturday, May 12, at around 9 p.m.
According to the father, the two were returning from their trip when he hit a bulkhead. He says his son was ejected from the boat, hit the bulkhead, and ricocheted back into the boat.
When LDWF agents arrived on the scene, both father and son were responsive and were put into an ambulance for transport.
Caleb White died from his injuries on the way to the hospital. Patrick White sustained minor injuries.
Agents conducted a field sobriety and breathalyzer test on Patrick White and his blood alcohol content was over the legal limit.
Patrick White was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide, operating or driving a vessel while intoxicated (DWI), and reckless operation.
The Ascension Parish Coroner's Office will conduct an autopsy on his son's body to determine an official cause of death.
