BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - LSU saved its best for last on Friday night, scoring six runs in its last at-bat capped by Beau Jordan's eighth inning grand slam homer, as the Tigers rallied to beat Alabama 7-5 at Alex Box Stadium in Game 1 of their final home SEC series.
Trailing 5-1 with just six outs remaining, LSU (30-20, 13-12) scored two runs to cut the Crimson Tide's lead in half, and then Jordan connected with the bases loaded for his team-leading eighth home run to complete the comeback.
LSU starter Zack Hess struggled with control and velocity, allowing six hits, four walks and four runs in just five innings of work. Alabama (25-26, 6-19) bidding to earn just its seventh SEC win took a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the third, when Daniel Cabrera finally got the Tigers on the board with an RBI double to make it 4-1.
Cabrera led LSU with a 3-for-5 night, but it was Jordan who saved the day with members of the 1993 College World Series champions looking on, after they were honored along with Hall of Fame coach Skip Bertman in pregame ceremonies.
