The Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s Office has issued some tips for property owners to protect their vacant or abandoned buildings from arson.

Any suspicious activity at an unoccupied building should be reported to local law enforcement.

The State Fire Marshal has an Arson Hotline where suspicious fire and/or explosion-related activity can be reported anonymously.

Officials recommend property owners board up:

  • All first-floor doors, windows, and basements
  • All points of entry accessible from a porch fire escape or other potential climbing point
  • Board with plywood or polycarbonate, 2X4 braces, carriage bolt sets and nails

For buildings that require authorized access, a single door that is visible from the street may be secured with a solid-core wood or steel door.

The structure must be posted with a “No Trespassing” sign at the completion of the board up.
