Elderly man found dead in home with no electricity that caught fire

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Firefighters were called out to a house fire Baton Rouge that resulted in one death early Wednesday morning.

The District 6 Fire Department responded to Matthews Street, which is in the Glen Oaks area, a little before 5 a.m.

Central Fire Department District Chief Derek Glover said an elderly man was found dead in the home. The victim's name has not been released.

Firefighters said flames were shooting through the roof when they arrived on the scene. They added they started searching the home after putting out those flames and that's when the elderly man's body was discovered.

Investigators reported the fire was contained to just that home. District 6 Fire Chief Joel Hancock said there was no electricity in the home. It is also believed the victim lived in the house alone.

The Baton Rouge Fire Department also responded to the fire.

The Louisiana Office of State Fire Marshal is assisting with the investigation into this deadly fire.
