Hammond man accused of killing 5-year-old in hit and run crash

HAMMOND, LA (WAFB) - A man has been arrested in connection with a hit and run crash that killed a 5-year-old boy in Hammond Monday evening.

Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Daniel Edwards said Davonta Johnson Abron, 25, of Hammond, has been charged with hit and run resulting in a fatality, negligent homicide, three outstanding warrants, and a parole violation.

The crash happened around 7:15 p.m. on May 7 near the intersection of East Park Street and Simpson Place. Abron is accused of fatally striking the child while driving a Nissan Sentra.

Witnesses told investigators they heard a loud crash and then saw the driver get out of the vehicle, walk around the vehicle looking for damages, and then getting back in the car and driving away.

The 5-year-old child was taken to a local hospital where he later died. His identity has not yet been released.

Abron was arrested around 2:30 a.m. on May 8 at his residence, investigators say.
