LPSO: Don't fall for scammers claiming to be law enforcement

LIVINGSTON PARISH, LA (WAFB) - The Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office is warning residents of a new scam circulating the parish.

"We have been notified that a scammer (or scammers) is pretending to represent members of the Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office. The caller, from a spoof number starting with 225 as the area code, informs the 'target' that they have missed a court appearance. Because they missed that court appearance, the scammer then tells the target that a warrant has been issued for their arrest. Now, in order to 'make things right,' the scammer tells the 'target' that money, and lots of it, is required," said Sheriff Jason Ard. "It appears as though the scammer is hoping the 'potential victim' is too busy to verify and would be more willing to follow their instructions. Please don't fall for this scam. Please don't give these criminals your hard earned money."

LPSO wants to remind residents their department will not call you to inform you of a missed court appearance or notify you of an active warrant and then try to make a deal. LPSO also does not accept payments in the form of gift cards or money grams. Call LPSO at 225-686-2241 to report any suspicious activity.
