Suspected crawfish thieves face burglary charges

MORGAN CITY, LA (WAFB) - Two men suspected of stealing crawfish were arrested early Saturday morning.

The Morgan City Police Department reported Carlos Ruiz-Santos, 41, of Patterson, and Gerardo Santiago-Garcia, 36, of Morgan City, are facing burglary charges.

According to authorities, an officer patrolling LA 182 saw a vehicle described as "suspicious," with its trunk open, speed off from a home in the Everette Street area of Morgan City.

Officials said other officers were contacted and stopped the vehicle. The officers reported seeing three sacks of live crawfish on the back seat and found 12 more in the trunk.

According to MCPD, officers then went to a business on LA 70 that sells crawfish and saw it had been broken into.

Reports indicate the owner confirmed 15 sacks of crawfish had been taken and investigators said surveillance video identified Ruiz-Santos and Santiago-Garcia as the thieves.

Investigators added they learned to two men tried to break into another building on the property but were unsuccessful.

The two men were booked into the Morgan City Jail on charges of simple burglary and attempted simple burglary.
