Diabetes Education Program offered through Baton Rouge General

The accredited Diabetes Education Program through Baton Rouge General (BRG) was established in 2013.

The Health & Wellness Center's Diabetes Education Program provides education and training services to patients with diabetes and those at high risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

Accredited by the American Association of Diabetes Educators, the program helps individuals improve their health outcomes as they learn to manage their illness.

While working with our registered dietitian and registered nurse, participants will:

  • Be assessed for any needs or concerns they may have about diabetes
  • Develop the skills needed to manage their diabetes
  • Receive an individualized education plan that will direct the appropriate diabetes self-management interventions
  • Establish support strategies as it relates to their diabetes

Interactive group education sessions are also available through the Diabetes Education Program with a focus on the following:

  • Diabetes disease process and treatment options
  • Incorporating nutritional management into lifestyle
  • Incorporating physical activity into lifestyle
  • Monitoring blood glucose levels and interpreting the results
  • Reviewing therapeutic treatments for effective diabetes management
  • Preventing, detecting and treating acute and chronic complications
  • Developing personal strategies to promote and maintain health and behavior changes

A physician referral is required for admission to the program. Most insurance plans cover diabetes education and nutrition therapy if the patient meets certain requirements. For more information on our Diabetes Education Program, please call (225) 819-1175.
