BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Some changes are coming to Government Street in Baton Rouge, including a new roundabout.
The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) announced Thursday that construction will begin Monday, May 7, weather permitting. The right lane of Government Street eastbound will be closed from east of Esplanade Avenue to Finchley Avenue. This closure will last about a month and is necessary for road patching, as well as curb and driveway repairs, and the installation of ADA-accessible ramps.
The current closure on Government westbound west of S Foster Drive will remain in place as well.
This construction is part of the Government Street Road Diet, an $11.7 million project on Government extending from East Boulevard to Lobdell Avenue near Independence Park. Once completed, there will be one lane of travel in each direction, plus a two-way center turn lane. There will also be sidewalk improvements and a bicycle lanes added in each direction.
A roundabout will also be put in to replace the intersection of Government, Lobdell, and Independence Park Boulevard.
