HAMMOND, LA (WAFB) - A 1-month-old child is dead after a wreck on I-12 near US 190, say officials with Louisiana State Police.
Troopers responded to the wreck on Wednesday, May 2 around 3:30 p.m. The wreck on I-12 E involved two vehicles, and left 1-month-old Bryce Martin of Hammond dead.
The initial investigation reveals the wreck happened as Erroll Nugent, 62, of Hammond, was driving a 2001 For Taurus east on I-12. After missing his exit to US 190 S, Nugent pulled into the center median of the interstate. As he tried to get back on the interstate, he pulled out in front of a 2006 Peterbilt 18-wheeler headed east in the left lane that was being driven by Reymundo Nunez of Mission, Texas. The 18-wheeler hit the back of the Taurus, causing both vehicles to head into the median.
Nunez was wearing his seat belt and was not injured. Nunez also provided troopers with a voluntary breath sample, which showed no alcohol present in his body. Nugent sustained moderate injuries and was transported to a local hospital. LSP troopers suspect Nugent was impaired at the time of the wreck. A blood sample will be sent to the LSP Crime Lab for analysis.
Nugent's passenger in the vehicle was Martin, who was not properly restrained. He sustained critical injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where he later died.Three other people in Nugent's vehicle sustained moderate injuries as well.
Once out of the hospital, Nugent will be booked into the St. Tammany Parish Jail on the following charges:
- Vehicular homicide
- Vehicular negligent injuring (3 counts)
- Child restraint (2 counts)
- Careless operation
- Suspended driver's license
The investigation is ongoing.
