(WAFB) - A Baton Rouge man has been arrested for having two wives.
Officials with East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office say they began investigating the case on March 23 after it was initially reported to the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff's Office.
The report states the man accused, Chaffie Brown Jr., 50, married his first wife in 1993. She claims that while living in LaPlace with her husband, she began to notice him staying away from home more and more. Brown claimed his work was requiring him to stay in Baton Rouge more frequently, so he purchased a second home there.
Then in January, the first wife says she discovered insurance paperwork that had her husband's name on it, as well as another woman's. She says she confronted Brown about it, who admitted to being married to this other woman. Brown claimed he'd already had the new marriage annulled, but the woman says she checked with the Clerk of Courts Office and discovered Brown was married to her and this other woman, whom he married in 2013 in East Baton Rouge Parish.
She says she found no records of an annulment.
Officials were able to obtain marriage records in both parishes and contact Brown in for an interview. Brown reportedly said "that's a nonissue and I've already taken care of that."
Brown was arrested Wednesday, May 2. He is charged with bigamy, which is defined as "the act of going through a marriage ceremony while already married to another person."
