BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Southern University has been awarded a grant in the amount of $40,000 to make improvements at the John B. Cade Library, which was damaged in January when some pipes froze and burst, which caused flooding.
Home Depot's Retool Your School program is funding the grant, which will pay for renovations to the library's reference room and study areas.
"My staff and I are thrilled that we have received this grant to aid in bringing functionality back to the library. We pride ourselves in ensuring that students have a pleasing and educational experience at the library," said Emma Perry, dean of libraries.
Since the flooding in January, the library has been open, but with limited to access to some floors. This grant will provide students with an additional place to gather, study, and do homework.
"I am so proud of our Jaguars and supporters who voted to make sure that we were in the running for this award. With this grant, we can greatly enhance an existing gem of the university," said Ray L. Belton, president-chancellor of SU.
Southern received more than 20,000 votes online to receive this grant.
