Benefit held for police officer, firefighter killed in hit and run while serving warrant

ZACHARY, LA (WAFB) - The Zachary Police Department and the Zachary Fire Department are coming together to hold a benefit for one of their own, who was killed in a hit and run incident while serving a warrant back in March.

A Zachary undercover police officer, who was also a firefighter, was killed on March 12 after being run over by a U-Haul truck in a Walmart parking lot. The East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner's Office identified the victim as Christopher Lawton, 41.

A benefit is being held for Lawton on Friday, May 4 in the parking lot of the Zachary City Hall. The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Ten dollars buys you a plate of jambalaya, white beans, and a roll, as well as a drink. Pre-orders of 10 or more can be emailed to and can be delivered. Checks should be made payable to the Chris Lawton Fund.

All proceeds from the benefit will go directly to Lawton's family.
