Officers go out into community hoping to build better connection

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - For a few hours Wednesday, many law enforcement officers were out trying to build a better connection with the community, hopefully making it easier to call in those tips.

This was picking up where the BRAVE program left off.

Members of the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office, Baton Rouge Police Department, some churches, and community groups were in the Glen Oaks area walking and passing out dinner.

Sheriff Sid Gautreaux said this is all about getting the community involved in what they do and building up trust.

"This is really community policing at its best," Gautreaux explained. "When we took the time to campus in area, knock on doors, seeing what people's problems are, what we can do right, what we've done wrong, whatever and try to correct those things, but really, just trying to use relationship between law enforcement in the community."

This is the fourth week they've been walking around in neighborhoods.

They hope to do a few more before the summer.
