BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A woman has died after a fire at a self storage building in Baton Rouge early Wednesday morning, according to officials.
The Louisiana Office of State Fire Marshal reported Thursday morning that the victim's organs were then harvested for donation. The victim's name has still not been released.
The St. George Fire Protection District reported the fire happened at Safeguard Self Storage on Coursey Boulevard, between Cedarcrest Avenue and South Sherwood Forest Boulevard, around 1:15 a.m.
The state fire marshal's office reported the storage facility has living quarters and an employee was living there. Investigators said the fire started in those living quarters.
SGFPD said the woman was found unresponsive near the stairs on the second floor of the building. Officials said firefighters quickly pulled her from the building and CPR was started. They added the victim was taken to the hospital by EMS in critical condition and later died.
The investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
