THIBODAUX, LA (WAFB) - The man who was stabbed when he allegedly attacked the mother of his children and her new boyfriend during a child custody exchange has been released from jail after posting bond.
The Thibodaux Police Department reported Randall Smith, 26, was booked on battery charges after being released from the hospital.
Investigators said the incident happened Friday night at a shopping center in Thibodaux.
According to police, Smith met with the mother of his children and her current boyfriend for a child custody exchange, but when he saw the new boyfriend was there, he refused to let the children go with their mother.
Police said the children's mother called police and Smith got angry, allegedly grabbing her by the arm as she sat in her vehicle. They added Smith also tried to punch her, but her boyfriend pushed Smith.
Authorities reported Smith then went to the other side of the vehicle where the boyfriend was sitting and started punching him. They added the woman's boyfriend fought back, pulling out a pocket knife and swinging it at Smith.
According to investigators, Smith pulled the woman's boyfriend out of the vehicle by his hair and started choking him. Smith reportedly told the other man he was going to break his neck.
TPD said an officer working a nearby detail arrived on the scene and stopped the fight. Police said Smith was covered in blood from getting stabbed. He was taken to the hospital, while the other man was treated at the scene, according to officials.
Authorities said Smith turned himself in to police Saturday after being released from the hospital. They added he was booked into the Lafourche Parish Detention Center on charges of domestic abuse battery with child endangerment and simple battery. They also said he was released from the Lafourche Parish Detention Center later in the day after posting a $7,500 bond.
Detectives said the other man was not charged because their investigation showed he acted in self-defense.
