Former WAFB owner, George Foster, passes away

WAFB - George Foster, the first local owner of WAFB-TV, died Thursday morning at the age of 94.

Foster helped build the family-owned Guaranty Insurance Company into a highly successful business which he ran for 62 years until his retirement in 2011.  His father, George Sr., started the insurance company in 1926. His son, Flynn Foster, is now the president of Guaranty Corporation and Guaranty Broadcasting.

"My Dad led a wonderful personal and professional life," Flynn Foster said Thursday. "He took his father's dream and saw it all the way through. In the end, he left a great legacy for our company and our family."

George Foster also owned WAFB-TV for about 25 years, having purchased the station in 1964. He went on to build a chain of successful radio stations including Eagle 98.1 and Tiger Country 100.7, Talk 107.3 and ESPN 104.5.

A funeral will be held Monday at 11am at Broadmoor Baptist Church. Foster's death Thursday fell on the same day as WAFB-TV's 65th anniversary.
