BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A 23-year-old Baton Rouge man is behind bars after reportedly entering a woman's apartment, raping her, then stealing from her.
Officials with the Baton Rouge Police Department say on Monday, April 16, sometime between 8 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., the man, later identified as Travohn James, 23, entered a woman's apartment and forcibly raped her, then stole from her.
The victim says around 8:30 p.m., James, who she recognized from around the complex, entered her apartment without her permission. Once inside, James reportedly told the woman his mother had kicked him out and he needed a safe place to stay. The woman says she told James to leave and that he couldn't stay with her, and that's when he began to forcibly take her clothes off.
The victim says James forced her to perform various sex acts and also took her cell phone. She says he threatened to kill her if she didn't comply. At one point, the woman says she tried to flee the apartment while partially clothed, but James was able to pull her back inside.
Before leaving, the victim says James took $100 in cash from a glass bowl on her coffee table and also took $30 from her purse in the dining room. The victim says James only returned her cell phone after she swore to not call police.
The victim was able to tell police that James' mother, who she knows, is the manager at a Circle K on College Drive. Officers were able to confirm the manager lives in the same complex as the victim and that the manager does have a son who matched the description given by the victim. The woman was able to identify James in a photographic lineup.
It should be noted James has previously been arrested in 2013 for unauthorized entry of an inhabited dwelling, in 2014 for peeping tom, in 2015 for theft and flight from an officer, and again in 2018 for simple battery.
This time, James is charged with first degree rape, aggravated burglary battery, and sexual battery.
