Kauai mayor: 'We've got a long road ahead of us'

KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Kauai Mayor Bernard Carvalho says the island has a "long weekend's record-breaking rains and widespread flooding.

Carvalho and Gov. David Ige have signed emergency proclamations to help speed up recovery efforts.

"What we're really focusing on right now is ... search and rescue and a thorough damage assessment," Carvalho said. "We've got a long road ahead of us. I've lived here all my life and this is one of the most serious situations on Kauai. Things are just terrible."

A flash flood warning for Kauai expired early Monday, but floodwaters remain high in many areas of northern Kauai.

Meanwhile, the American Red Cross is trying to safely move 61 people who sought emergency shelter in Hanalei on Sunday night.

Kuhio Highway remains closed in the Hanalei Bridge area. It's unclear when crews will be able to finish repairs to reopen the roadways.
