After Rescue, What Comes Next?

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Governor Kathleen Blanco says she's seen despair in the faces of hurricane survivors. And for them, days, weeks, even months of uncertainty remain.

One man rescued with his family by boat in New Orleans says "everything is destroyed, everything is gone."

Inside the Superdome, some 10,000 evacuees face another likely evacuation and the grinding uncertainty of what their lives will be like when they eventually return to their homes.

Federal Emergency Management director Mike Brown says many thousands will need temporary shelter for weeks if not months to come.

A 30-year resident of Mississippi's Gulf Coast says he is not likely to stay after seeing his home destroyed. He says seeing all the destruction has him inclined to not "want to live here anymore."
