BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - LSU earned a massive SEC series victory Saturday with a 4-0 victory over Mississippi State.
Freshman pitcher Ma'Khail Hilliard was the star of the show, leading the Tigers with six strong innings on the mound. Hilliard's line was an impressive six innings of work, giving up only three hits with a career-high nine strikeouts. His finest work on the day was getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the sixth to keep LSU in the lead.
The Tigers offense, stagnant most of the game, came through in the later innings to seal the victory. A double by Austin Bain on a perfect hit-and-run in the second inning gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead. But the bats fell silent after that. At one point in the game, LSU had gone 38 innings only scoring five runs (excluding the eight-run eighth inning Thursday night).
But the bats finally came alive in the seventh. Daniel Cabrera gave fans a sigh of relief with a two-run home run to extend LSU's lead to 3-0. Zach Watson would follow with a leadoff home run the very next inning to effectively put the game out of reach. Nick Bush shut down the Bulldogs in the ninth to seal the Tigers' 4-0 win, clinching the series.
The Tigers are now 18-11 overall, and 5-4 in the SEC.
LSU hosts Nicholls State at Alex Box on Tuesday before traveling to College Station for another crucial weekend series at Texas A&M.
