NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) -

“She’s a very nice lady who would always invite you into her home,” John Wagner said.

Neighbors say 73-year-old Beverly Wilkerson lived in the Little Woods neighborhood for more than 30 years. They were shocked when police found her body inside her home Sunday afternoon. She’d been shot and her body wrapped in plastic.

“It’s just tragic, and it’s heartbreaking for all us back here. The neighbors have been back here for a long time, and they’re stung and they’re hurt,” Wagner said.

Police arrested Wilkerson’s 32-year-old grandson, Ernest Richardson, and booked him with second-degree murder.

According to the arrest warrant, police got a call from the Historic Second Baptist Church in the Milan neighborhood. The caller told police that a man said he had just killed his grandmother. Police arrested Richardson at the church where they also found Wilkerson’s Toyota Camry out front.

“Very sweet lady, and I talked to Ms. Beverly all the time. Ms. Beverly has had a couple of issues with her family, and it’s critical. It’s hard. My heart goes out to her,” Wagner said.

Police said during an interview with Richardson, he confessed to shooting his grandmother, wrapping her body in plastic and then taking her car.

Still, there’s no motive in the case.

People who lived close to the victim for years said the neighborhood won't be the same without her.

“It’s just heartbreaking. The criminal justice system needs to just take care of their business with these types of people,” Wagner said.

Richardson remains jailed on a $350,000 bond.
