BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A Republican state senator has called for Louisiana Secretary of State Tom Schedler to step down following revelations of an alleged sexual relationship with a subordinate outlined in a lawsuit filed by the employee last week.

After the lawsuit was filed, Schedler claimed the relationship with the employee was "consensual" but the employee's attorney, Jill Craft, denied Schedler's claim.

The employee of Schedler also alleged years of sexual harassment, in which Schedler, "engaged in a pattern and practice of sexual harassment and retaliatory harassment," according to the lawsuit.

Senator Sharon Hewitt - whose district represents portions of St. Tammany, St. Bernard and Plaquemines - issued the following statement Wednesday recommending Schedler resign:

"I've read the detailed and documented accusations of sexual harassment against Tom Schedler. It is very sad to read charges about someone I've known for years and consider a friend. His admission of an inappropriate relationship with a state worker that reported to him is indefensible.

Karen Carter Peterson, a state senator from New Orleans and chair of the Louisiana Democratic Party, has previously called for Schedler to step down following the lawsuit.
