BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Next week, a panel of lawmakers will finalize ideas for how to overhaul the popular TOPS scholarship program. They've been meeting for the past several months.
Wednesday, they vetted a few more ideas, including one by Senator Bodi White. He wants to open the door for TOPS students who only qualify for community college, allowing them to transfer to a four year institution and continue to get an award. Some argue that's adding to the already financially stretched program, not reining it in.
"We have too many students coming out of high school that's not ready for an LSU or Louisiana Tech, or maybe for Southern or any of the major four year universities," said White.
"If we don't quit adding things to TOPS and increasing the costs, we're not going to have TOPS," said Sen. Ed Price, D-Gonzales.
Legislators will vote on their list of proposals Wednesday, February 7. Those ideas could then be turned into bills during this year's legislative session.
