One man dead after car struck trees, became engulfed in flames

COVINGTON, LA (WAFB) -

One man is dead after a vehicle struck a tree and was engulfed in flames.

Deputies with the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office say they arrived on the scene of a vehicle on fire shortly after 11:30 p.m. Saturday night on Memphis Trace in the Natchez Trace subdivision in Covington.

Deputies say a vehicle drove off the road and struck a tree before becoming engulfed in flames.

Prior to the vehicle catching fire, good Samaritans pulled the driver from the vehicle and attempted to render aid, according to a statement from the Sheriff's office on Facebook.

Once on the scene, emergency personnel transported 36-year-old Samuel Collins, of Ponchatoula, to a local hospital where he died from the injuries sustained.

Speed and alcohol use are suspected to be factors in the crash, and a toxicology sample will be taken from the driver for analysis.

Anyone with information regarding the crash is asked to call 985-898-2338 or 911.
